Problem could be that another Dane is already Secretary General at NATO (even with the same surname ;-) Therefore I don't think that the European Council would support a Dane to become High Rep.

I am not sure about Miliband. A lot depends on his career plans. However, he could emerge as compromise candidate if Blair drops out of the race...

I think Miliband would be a good option, especially as he's significantly younger than most of the other "candidates", which could help revitalising the face of the EU. However it's unclear whether he'd take the job or not. He said he's not "running" for it. Doesn't mean he doesn't want it... Poul Nyrup Rasmussen could be good at this job too.

Well, David Miliband is obviously a Labour politician. Ahtisaari was nominated by the Social-Democrats for the Finnish presidency.

So who do you think the PES should support? Indeed, it wbould be great to have some more PES names in the race ;-) They could also support someone like Fischer who is a member of the Green party but was part of the Red-Green coalition government in Germany. A transparent selection procedure would also be revolutionary - a possibility for the PES to show some leadership in Europe!

Thanks for the analysis! There's one thing missing though: the fact that the socialists are going for the High Rep job: http://www.pes.org/en/news/pes-insists-one-three-key-eu-posts-0
So you should probably have added a few socialist and social-democrats names to your list...

I was thinking about translation the other day. If it had been translated as "chairperson" in the English version we would have not seen this strange debate. Although the German version does include "Präsident" it quite common to say "Ratspräsident" which somehow is different from what one would associate with the word "president".

I thought of it more in foreign policy terms. He did a solid job at NATO but I somehow never had the feeling he is ambitious enough to change the organisation according to his vision. But that might be a subjective statement...

Who mentioned Christine Lagarde? Have not seen anything about her lately (which obviously does not mean anything ;-)

I'd doubt that you could describe De Hoop Scheffer as someone without political ambition. He's been leader of the Dutch CDA party before an inner-party feud cost him that position (but got his friend Balkenende the post), was then appointed Dutch Foreign Minister by Balkenende and moved on to NATO Secretary General. His politics are more explicitly Atlanticist than those of Bildt.

If I were a betting man I'd put my money on Christine Lagarde.

Kosmopolito,

Good of you to discuss the important job.

For instance the Swedish and Finnish versions of the Lisbon Treaty actually use the word for chairperson for the European Council president.

Hix may have been carried away when he described the High Representative as "little prestige". Despite the clay feet of EU foreign policy, there are more humble tasks in this world than to represent 500 million people.

The new top jobs offer the European Council a chance to require open nominations and public debate about the contenders, if the European leaders want to take the decisions as openly as possible and as closely as possible to the citizen.

But it looks like the European leaders are going to flunk the test, again.
