If it had been translated as "chairperson" in the English version we would have not seen this strange debate. Although the German version does include "Präsident" it quite common to say "Ratspräsident" which somehow is different from what one would associate with the word "president". He's been leader of the Dutch CDA party before an inner-party feud cost him that position (but got his friend Balkenende the post), was then appointed Dutch Foreign Minister by Balkenende and moved on to NATO Secretary General. His politics are more explicitly Atlanticist than those of Bildt. If I were a betting man I'd put my money on Christine Lagarde.
